Daily intake of multivitamins slows down the aging of the body.

Daily intake of multivitamins may slightly slow down the biological aging of the body. This conclusion was reached by scientists who analyzed data from a large clinical study. The results of the work were published in the journal Nature Medicine.

Researchers studied the so-called biological age — an indicator of how quickly the body's cells age. It can differ from chronological age. To assess this, "epigenetic clocks" were used — methods that determine the body's age based on changes in DNA. The analysis included data from 958 participants in the COSMOS study, with an average age of about 70 years.

Participants took various combinations of supplements for two years: cocoa extract, multivitamins, or a placebo. Comparisons showed that people taking daily multivitamins experienced biological aging at a slightly slower rate. According to the scientists' calculations, the difference corresponded to about four months of "slowed" aging over two years.

The greatest effect was observed in participants whose biological age at the beginning of the study was higher than their actual age. The authors emphasize that the results require further research. In the future, scientists plan to determine whether such changes are associated with longer life and a reduced risk of age-related diseases.
