European countries need to fundamentally rethink their environmental protection plans and start preparing for a scenario in which the global temperature rises by 3 °C. This is stated in a new report by the European Scientific Advisory Council on Climate Change (ESABCC), the key points of which are provided by the newspaper “The Guardian.”
ESABCC board member Martin van Alst emphasized that the continent is already suffering economic and social losses due to slow adaptation. At the same time, the expert is convinced that many measures to prepare for a hotter future are based on common sense and are quite feasible in the near term, reports nra.lv.
"It is a complex task, but at the same time it is entirely achievable. It’s not rocket science," van Alst noted.
ESABCC analysts criticize the current government policy, calling adaptation efforts "insufficient, mostly gradual, and often delayed."
According to the forecasts presented in the document, by 2100, the global temperature will rise by 2.8–3.3 °C compared to pre-industrial levels. These figures actually exceed by two times the limit set by world leaders in the Paris Agreement of 2015, raising doubts about the effectiveness of existing international agreements.
