The price increase is driven by the AI boom.

Journalists from TechSpot reported on whether it is wise to save money when building a computer by using cheaper RAM. The material is available on the media's website.

Against the backdrop of a massive price increase for RAM modules driven by the needs of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, the authors found cheaper components made in China available for sale. The specialists purchased memory modules from CXMT — a little-known manufacturer from Asia.

A 32-gigabyte memory kit cost them $138, while DRAM kits from more well-known manufacturers can cost up to $400. The journalists compared the Chinese kit with memory from SK hynix.

When running the games Rainbow Six Siege, Marvel Rivals, and Cyberpunk 2077, the CXMT memory demonstrated performance comparable to ultra-premium DDR5. The authors concluded that Chinese RAM can compete with models from more recognized brands if its price remains at an affordable level.

In early February, one of the leading computer manufacturers, Lenovo, recommended that users update their devices as soon as possible amid rising prices. The main reason for the increase is the needs of data centers processing artificial intelligence requests.
