Windows will start blocking user programs

Windows 11 will feature a permission and prohibition system for applications.

Microsoft has announced a permission system for applications in Windows 11. This was noted by the publication Windows Latest.

The company referred to the new system as the "basic security mode." In the operating system (OS), only those programs and services that have the appropriate digital signature will operate without restrictions. For example, drivers or proprietary utilities. Unsigned software (SW) and poorly verified programs will need to obtain permission from the user.

Windows platform engineer Logan Iyer stated that for decades the OS has balanced on a fine line between openness and security. In new versions of the system, Windows will start blocking programs that do not have user permission — immediately after installation, by default, they will not function correctly.

Journalists from Windows Latest examined the new protection mechanism and concluded that it resembles that found in smartphones. Devices based on Android and iOS, after installing an application, may ask the user for access to the photo gallery, permission to send SMS, or to access the camera. They also explained that permissions are reversible — the user will be able to revoke them from a specific application or grant new ones.
