Volkswagen Surpassed Tesla in Electric Vehicle Sales in Europe

The German automaker VW became the leader in electric vehicle sales in Europe by the end of 2025. Observers do not rule out that it may push the American competitor Tesla out of its position.

The German automotive group Volkswagen (VW) became the largest seller of electric vehicles in Europe by the end of 2025, according to the German news program Tagesschau on Saturday, February 7. As noted on the program's website, the sales results for 2025 suggest that the Wolfsburg-based automaker could push the American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla out of its leading position.

The authors of Tagesschau refer to an analysis by JATO, a company specializing in business consulting. According to this data, last year VW sold 274,278 electric vehicles. This figure is 56% higher than the level in 2024. It is indicated that this result was achieved mainly due to the sales of new VW models, including the mid-range electric vehicle ID.7.

Decline in Tesla's Electric Vehicle Sales in Europe

As for Tesla, its sales in Europe fell by 27% in 2025 compared to 2024. This may be related to the manufacturer continuing to focus on selling its "outdated" models in Europe. Another possible reason for the decline in sales volumes is attributed to image problems related to its policies. According to Tagesschau, Tesla is considered to have the worst reputation in Germany.

Nevertheless, the Tesla Model Y became the best-selling electric vehicle model in Europe in 2025. In second place is the Elroq from the automaker Skoda, which is part of the VW group.
