BGR: a smartphone should be replaced no more than every 2-3 years, iPhone — 5 years.
Journalists from BGR studied expert advice and identified the optimal time to replace a smartphone. The material was published on the media's website.
Experts noted that the lifespan of a device directly depends on the software (OS) lifecycle. For instance, Apple supports iPhones with updates for five years and considers gadgets outdated seven years after their release. Accordingly, American brand phones can be replaced every five years.
Android smartphones typically receive updates for at least 2-3 years from the date of release. Journalists noted that there are exceptions: Google, Samsung, and other manufacturers have started releasing phones with a support period of 5-7 years. However, this practice cannot be called widespread in the market.
An important aspect of this issue, the authors pointed out, is the condition of the battery. If the battery's lifespan has expired, it needs to be replaced or a new smartphone should be purchased. It is also worth considering how popular applications perform on the device. "Even if the phone turns on and works normally, it may lack the necessary software for further operation," the journalists stated.
At the end of December 2025, Apple announced in an advertisement the optimal time for updating an iPhone. Judging by the materials the company distributes online, devices should be replaced every three years.
