Science News: the last three years have been the hottest on record.
The last three years have been the hottest in recorded history. This is stated in a study published in the journal Science News.
2023, 2024, and 2025 formed the first three-year period in history during which the average global temperature consistently exceeded the threshold of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. This mark is associated with increased risks to ecosystems, human health, and a rise in extreme weather events.
In 2025, the average temperature on the planet was 1.47 degrees above pre-industrial levels. It ranked as the third hottest year. The record remains 2024, when the temperature exceeded pre-industrial levels by 1.6 degrees.
Scientists warn that by 2029, temperatures may begin to consistently exceed the 1.5-degree mark. The main reason for the rapid warming remains the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels.
