According to the Critical Technology Tracker report by the ASPI analytical center, China has emerged as a global leader in most key scientific fields. In 2025, experts assessed 74 active and promising technologies.
China ranks first in research across 66 out of 74 fields, including nuclear energy, synthetic biology, and small satellites. The U.S. leads in only eight areas, among which are neuroprosthetics and geotechnics, writes 4PDA.
The ASPI methodology is based on the analysis of the most influential scientific works and the top 10% of the most cited publications from 2020 to 2024. In the fields of cloud and edge computing, computer vision, generative AI, and energy grid integration, there is a noticeable high risk of technological monopoly due to the concentration of expertise in Chinese institutions.
The report also notes the growing role of other countries. For example, the EU demonstrates achievements in four areas, while Germany ranks in the top five in 30 fields. South Korea holds leading positions in 32 technologies and has surpassed the U.S. in hydrogen energy, while India has entered the top five in 50 fields.
