The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip for smartphones with continuous listening capability has been released.

Qualcomm has introduced a processor for smartphones capable of continuously listening to users. This was noted by the publication 9to5Google.

The announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is a simplified version of the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. It is likely to be used in Android sub-flagships. Journalists observed that the chip has a dedicated co-processor for artificial intelligence (AI) that will operate continuously. Thus, it will be able to respond to voice commands from the user and determine when the device owner picks it up.

The chip, capable of constantly monitoring the user, will be able to timely activate the voice assistant or AI assistant. It will analyze "microphone signals and sensors to determine the user's intent to speak." The authors of 9to5Google noted that smartphone manufacturers will need to further link the chip's features with the functionality of the chosen AI service.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is built on a 3-nanometer process technology. It features two Prime cores at 3.8 gigahertz and six Performance cores at 3.2 gigahertz. Qualcomm stated that the new chip will be 36 percent more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 released in 2023. Iqoo, Vivo, Motorola, and OnePlus have already confirmed their interest in installing the new processor.
