China has decided to ban power banks without a screen for safety reasons.
Chinese authorities have stated that external batteries without a screen can be potentially dangerous for users. This was reported by ITHome.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has prepared a ban on the sale of power banks in the country that do not have a display and a proprietary application. Experts revealed that a built-in screen and companion app would allow monitoring the technical characteristics of the batteries and any malfunctions in their operation.
According to officials, the number of incidents related to the ignition of external batteries on board airplanes has sharply increased over the past year. Earlier, local authorities had already banned the transportation of batteries that do not have China Compulsory Certification.
The report states that the new technical requirements will force about 70 percent of power bank manufacturers to close their businesses. Journalists explained that small and medium-sized manufacturers would not have the capability to prepare products that meet the strict requirements. The ban may be implemented by June 2026.
In October, it became known about a power bank catching fire on board an Air China flight from Hangzhou to Seoul. The fire was quickly extinguished by the flight attendants, and no passengers on the flight were harmed.
