The foldable iPhone may fail in China due to eSIM.
The foldable smartphone from Apple will struggle to gain popularity in several markets due to its features. This was reported by the specialized publication MacRumors.
Journalists referred to a report from a well-known insider under the nickname Instant Digital, who predicted that the iPhone Fold will not support physical SIM cards — only eSIM. The specialist noted that in design, the foldable device will be similar to the iPhone Air, which also works only with eSIM. In this regard, the iPhone Fold may fail in China.
The authors of MacRumors explained that in China, the eSIM technology is not as popular as in the USA, Europe, and other countries around the world. This is also explained by local specifics: locals are accustomed to using a SIM card in several smartphones, switching them out. Additionally, there is a strong culture of reselling phones in China. Therefore, even the newest and most advanced smartphones — for example, the foldable Huawei Mate X7 — have a slot for physical SIM cards.
Journalists reminded that in the fall, the iPhone Air, which works exclusively with eSIM, was released in the region. The device supports up to two cellular plans; however, visiting a service center is still required for their activation. MacRumors specialists concluded that the iPhone Fold, which is expected to be released in 2026, may fail in the market, just like the ultra-thin iPhone Air.
