The European Commission (EC) has launched an investigation into the internet technology company Google regarding how it uses online content in search results generated by artificial intelligence, as well as videos uploaded to the YouTube platform for training AI models, LETA reports citing DPA.

As part of the investigation, it will be assessed whether Google is violating European Union competition rules by not providing proper compensation to content publishers or not offering them the option to opt out of using their materials in AI summaries without losing access to Google's search engine, the European Commission stated.

"Indeed, many publishers rely on Google's search engine to attract users and do not want to risk losing access to it," the commission explained.

In addition, the European Commission is investigating whether Google uses videos uploaded to the YouTube platform to train generative artificial intelligence models without providing authors with appropriate compensation or the option to opt out of using their videos.
