UBTech Robotics has signed an agreement worth 264 million yuan (approximately 35,000,000 euros) to deploy humanoid robots at border checkpoints in the Guangxi Autonomous Region.

The agreement has been made with the robotics center in Fangchenggang, a coastal city bordering Vietnam. As part of the project, Walker S2 robots, introduced in July and claimed to be the world's first machines capable of autonomously replacing their own batteries, will be deployed. This is one of the largest examples of the implementation of humanoid robots in China's government structures.

The pilot program involves placing Walker S2 robots at border control points, where they will guide travelers, regulate the flow of people, assist in patrolling, and perform logistical tasks.

The Walker S2 robot, created by the Chinese company UBTECH, stands 162 centimeters tall and weighs 43 kilograms. It operates on a 48-volt lithium battery in a dual-battery system and can function for two to four hours (depending on the type of activity) before needing a recharge. A full battery charge takes 90 minutes.

One of the key advantages of the model is the autonomous battery replacement system. According to UBTech, the robot can replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in about three minutes, ensuring nearly round-the-clock operation without human intervention.

The company plans to deliver 500 robots by the end of the year, increase production tenfold next year, and reach an output of 10,000 units annually by 2027.

In China, robotics is actively developing in other areas — healthcare and elderly care, urban cleaning, traffic management, public safety, as well as in automated delivery systems via subways and drones. Border control is becoming another sector increasingly influenced by China's pursuit of embodied artificial intelligence.
