Poland has concluded one of the largest defense deals in recent years, choosing the Swedish company Saab as the supplier of three new submarines, Reuters reports.
Saab will supply Poland with modern A26 submarines. Following the news, the company's shares rose by 3.2%. Earlier, in September, Saab signed a memorandum of defense cooperation with the Polish PGZ.
Poland's Minister of Defense Mariusz Błaszczak stated that Sweden provided "the best offer across all criteria – from delivery times to operational capabilities in the Baltic Sea."
He estimated the contract's value at around 10 billion zlotys (approximately $2.73 billion).
As part of the agreement, Sweden also committed to purchasing certain types of weapons from Poland and providing a submarine for training Polish military personnel.
The commercial contract is expected to be signed by the second quarter of 2026, with the first submarine anticipated to be received in 2030.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the agreement as a testament to the strength of the Swedish defense industry and the robustness of cooperation between the countries. "This not only demonstrates the strength of cooperation between our countries but also Sweden's strength as a country with a developed defense industry," he added.
