Kiel University: The African continent will split in 5-10 million years.
Scientists from Kiel University in Germany have stated that the African continent is splitting into two parts. The corresponding study was published on the website of the Journal of African Earth Sciences.
It is noted that this process was first discovered back in the late 1960s; however, with the help of new technologies, experts have been able to examine the phenomenon in more detail. In particular, scientists have found that the African continent is shifting, stretching, and breaking apart.
According to experts' estimates, in approximately 5-10 million years, Africa will consist of two land masses.
Earlier, Professor Ken Macdonald from the University of California stated that the African continent will split much sooner than previously thought. A crack about 56.5 kilometers long in the Ethiopian desert appeared in 2005. However, since then, it has been expanding at a rate of about 1.5 centimeters per year.
