Motorola refused to support smartphones in Europe for 5 years – this is an EU requirement.

Motorola has chosen not to comply with the European Union (EU) regulation regarding smartphone support. This was reported by NotebookCheck.

In June, a regulation came into effect requiring smartphones sold in EU markets to receive updates for a minimum of 5 years. However, Motorola decided to ignore the new European laws. Journalists noted that the company continued to sell devices that have a shorter update support period.

Motorola's products are not very popular in Europe; however, in the United States, the company ranks among the top three in smartphone shipments. According to the authors of NotebookCheck, it is not profitable for the company to support some low-cost phones with updates. The Motorola Moto G06 costs only 100 euros (9,200 rubles) in Europe. In this regard, the company's lawyers found a loophole in the law.

It turned out that the text of the regulation states that offered updates, if provided for five years or more, must be free for the user. "However, we are not aware of any cases where a smartphone manufacturer charged for security updates," the journalists noted. Therefore, Motorola continued to sell phones with limited support but guaranteed that it would always be free.
