The Guardian: man with an old smartphone could not reach emergency services.

A Samsung smartphone user from Australia was unable to call emergency services due to issues with the device and did not survive. This was noted by The Guardian.

The incident occurred on November 13 in Sydney, Australia. An unnamed man urgently needed medical assistance, but he could not reach emergency services by phone. The victim was found later, but it was not possible to save him. It turned out that the man was unable to contact paramedics because his smartphone did not support calls to the emergency line.

Later, TPG, the operator used by the victim, explained that many smartphones from Samsung that have not been updated in time may not support calls to 000 — the emergency services number in Australia. The devices are configured in such a way that when dialing 000, they switch to 3G mode. However, the 3G network in the region has been turned off, and therefore calls to certain numbers have stopped going through.

In a statement to Android Authority, Samsung emphasized that it strongly recommends timely software updates on smartphones. "This is crucial for maintaining the highest standards of security, reliability, and performance," the company concluded.
