Depression accelerates memory decline and cognitive function deterioration.

Scientists from China have discovered that depression can accelerate memory decline and cognitive function deterioration by acting through social isolation. The study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders (JAD), is based on data from over 9,000 participants in the national CHARLS study, who were observed over five years.

The researchers showed that individuals with pronounced symptoms of depression tend to have fewer contacts with children, friends, and neighbors over time, as well as a decrease in engagement in community activities. This, in turn, provokes a decline in memory and concentration abilities. According to the authors, isolation accounts for about three percent of the overall effect of depression on cognitive functions, which, despite being a small share, has serious implications for the aging population.

The authors note that depression acts as a chronic stressor, depleting internal resources and reducing social motivation. They recommend combining the treatment of depressive disorders with programs aimed at strengthening social connections — regular communication, participation in support groups, and digital forms of interaction. Such measures, they believe, will help maintain mental clarity longer and prevent the development of dementia.
