Intel has found a way to improve laptop battery life by reducing screen refresh rates.

Engineers at Intel have announced that they have found a new way to extend the battery life of laptops on a single charge. The company made this announcement on the social network WeChat.

Intel noted that they created this innovation in collaboration with the Chinese display manufacturer BOE. Specialists designed a matrix for laptop displays that can show images at a frequency of about 1 hertz, thus saving the battery charge of the portable computer.

Displays of most modern computers show images at a fixed frequency of 60 hertz. Screens of many advanced models can reach frequencies of 120 hertz and higher. The partners explained that the Intel Multi-Frequency Display (MFD) technology allows different content to be displayed on the same screen at different frequencies. For example, static content will receive a frequency of 1 hertz, meaning 1 image refresh per second.

Additionally, most content is not designed to be displayed even at 60 hertz. Intel provided the example of many films that are shot at a frequency of 24 hertz. In this case, the display will lower the screen frequency.

The first laptops with adaptive IPS and OLED screens will go on sale in 2026.
