While ordinary people are urged to conserve energy resources to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, the demand for electricity from artificial intelligence is only increasing. To this end, American corporations are investing billions of dollars in the restoration of nuclear power plants - including those infamous due to accidents.
Google Corporation in the US will restart a nuclear power plant capable of generating more than 600 megawatts of electricity by early 2029.
Google's initiative follows a growing trend among American tech giants: Microsoft has signed an agreement to restart the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania. This nuclear power plant is infamous for the accident at its second reactor in 1979 — the most serious incident in the history of nuclear energy in the US. As a result of the accident, the second reactor was partially destroyed, but the first reactor remained unharmed and operated until 2019. Under the agreement, Constellation Energy plans to bring the first reactor back online by 2028: the capacity of the restored nuclear power plant will be 837 MW.
Meanwhile, Meta Corporation - the owner of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram - has entered into a partnership to obtain energy from the Clinton Clean Energy Center nuclear power plant in the state of Illinois.
According to American experts, to maintain US leadership in the new "arms race" - with artificial intelligence playing a significant role in the defense industry - America needs to significantly increase electricity production and attract talent from around the world on an even larger scale. Experts point out that the AI race cannot be won without a powerful energy base, and production needs to be substantially ramped up. However, they do not mention the impending revolution of humanoid robots and the increase in the number of electric vehicles, which will require a colossal amount of electricity.
In Germany, on Saturday, October 25, two 160-meter cooling towers of the former Gundremmingen nuclear power plant were demolished. This occurred according to plan nearly four years after the last nuclear reactor of this power plant was shut down, reports Tagesschau.
