Smartphones will work faster thanks to the new UFS 5.0 memory.

In the near future, smartphones will receive significantly faster built-in memory. This was reported by PhoneArena.

On Monday, October 6, the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) published the specifications for the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 standard. The organization stated that the standard will provide a significant increase in read and write speeds, which will overall enhance the performance of gadgets.

Compared to UFS 4.0, the new standard nearly doubles the data transfer speed — from 5.8 to 10.8 gigabytes per second. The UFS 4.0 standard was introduced in 2022. Experts noted that the built-in memory modules will be more energy-efficient. The material indicates that the UFS 5.0 standard was developed with the needs of artificial intelligence (AI) in mind.

PhoneArena journalists pointed out that no smartphone manufacturers have yet announced plans to create new devices using UFS 5.0 storage. However, they reminded that Samsung released Galaxy S23 series phones with UFS 4.0 support just a few months after the specifications were announced. It is unknown whether Apple will adopt the new standard — the company does not disclose such information.
