NotebookCheck: smartphones made of metal have almost disappeared as the material creates interference.

The authors of the NotebookCheck portal explained why smartphones and tablets with metal bodies have almost completely disappeared from the market. The material was published on the publication's website.

According to specialists, the material for a gadget's body must be durable and protect sensitive components. For a long time, manufacturers used metal; however, it has a significant drawback — it can shield communication modules and create interference. Therefore, smartphones and other gadgets gradually began to be made from plastic and glass, reducing the number of metal parts to a minimum.

Apple has devised a way to create iPhones and iPads from metal while ensuring proper operation of wireless modules. They started printing plastic antennas and integrating them into metal bodies. "By the way, this solution is now popular in cars as well," the authors noted. However, cheaper devices often have plastic bodies because integrating an antenna into metal is very expensive.

At the same time, Apple recently introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, which feature a solid metal body. However, to ensure connectivity and wireless charging, a glass insert was placed on the back.
