The Latvian national ice hockey team will play its last group stage match of the World Championship against Hungary today. The team only needs to earn at least one point to guarantee its advancement to the quarter-finals.
The Latvian men's national team will play one of the most important matches of the current Ice Hockey World Championship today. In the final game of the group stage, the Latvian team will face Hungary.
The match will take place at the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich and will start at 13:20 Latvian time. The live broadcast will be shown on the LTV7 channel.
The situation for the Latvian team before the last round looks quite favorable. To advance to the quarter-finals, the team needs any victory or even just one point.
In addition, Latvia still has a chance to finish in third place in the group. This could be particularly important, as then the likely opponent in the quarter-finals would be Norway, rather than one of the tournament's main favorites.
After six matches, Latvia has nine points — the same as Austria. Leading the group are Switzerland and Finland, each with 18 points. Germany has already completed the group stage with ten points, while the USA has eight.
For Latvian fans, this championship has become one of the most emotional in recent years. The team arrived in Switzerland noticeably renewed — with seven debutants in the squad.
Particular attention has been drawn to 17-year-old forward Oliver Murnieks, who became the youngest hockey player in the history of the Latvian national team at the World Championships. Another young player, 18-year-old defenseman Albert Schmitz, has already played for the national team at the Olympics.
At the same time, the team is competing in the tournament without several key players. Due to injuries, Rodrigo Abols, Arturs Shilovs, Dan Lochmelis, Eriks Mateiko, and Henri Ravinskis are missing the championship. Christian Rubins, Felix Gavars, and Richard Bukarts are also not helping the team.
Several Latvian NHL players have also declined to participate in the tournament, including Zemgus Girgensons, Teodors Blugers, Elvis Merzlikins, and Uvis Balinskis.
Nevertheless, the team maintains good chances for the playoffs — especially after the unsuccessful last World Championship, when Latvia failed to reach the quarter-finals and finished the tournament only in tenth place.
Today's match will effectively serve as a test of how quickly the renewed team has been able to adapt to the level of the World Championship.
The World Championship is taking place in Zurich and Fribourg and will conclude on May 31. The top four teams from each group will advance to the playoffs.
