Latvia to Play Decisive Match in Ice Hockey World Championship: Balcers Stated That the Team Is 'Backed Against the Wall' 0 17

Before the key match of the Ice Hockey World Championship, the captain of the Latvian national team, Rudolf Balcers, acknowledged that the team is well aware of the situation in the standings and the importance of the upcoming game against Hungary, writes LETA.

To advance to the quarter-finals, the Latvian team needs to earn points in the last group stage match. According to Balcers, the atmosphere within the team remains good, but the players understand that they cannot relax.

"The main thing is to understand that there is another serious opponent ahead," emphasized the captain of the Latvian team.

Balcers noted that the match against Hungary will likely be tough and physically demanding. He stated that Hungarian hockey players are large and know how to play offensively.

"We need to forget all previous matches and prepare seriously for this game," said the forward.

Currently, Balcers is one of the most productive players in the tournament. He has already scored six goals in the World Championship. The forward also highlighted the good understanding with his line partners Denis Smirnov and Sandis Vilmanis.

For Latvian fans, this championship has already been emotional — the team has shown bright hockey several times but has also periodically lost concentration during matches.

Balcers himself pointed out this issue. According to him, the national team needs to play consistently throughout the entire match without any lapses.

"After the loss to Austria, we are backed against the wall, and there is no turning back," said the captain.

If Latvia earns points in the game against Hungary, the team will secure a place in the quarter-finals and will play on Thursday against one of the best teams from Group B in Fribourg.

The semi-finals and medal matches will take place in Zurich.

The World Championship in Switzerland will conclude on May 31.
