The Latvian ice hockey team will play one of the most important matches of the group stage of the World Championship today in Zurich — against Austria. A victory will allow the Latvian team to seriously engage in the fight for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Latvian men's ice hockey team will continue the World Championship with a match against Austria — a team that has already become one of the unexpected leaders of Group A.

The game will take place in Zurich at the "Swiss Life" arena and will start at 17:20 Latvian time.

After two opening matches, the situation in the group remains extremely tight. Latvia began the tournament with a loss to Switzerland, 2:4, but then confidently defeated Germany, 2:0. The Austrians, on the other hand, have already accumulated six points, winning against Great Britain and Hungary.

In fact, today's match could significantly impact the battle for fourth place in the group and advancement to the playoffs. Especially considering that the Latvian team still has matches ahead against Finland and the USA.

After three rounds, Switzerland and Finland remain the leaders of the group, each with nine points. Austria has six points, while Latvia and the USA currently have three.

For the Latvian team, the current championship is taking place under challenging personnel conditions. The team arrived in Switzerland with seven debutants. The main attention is drawn to 17-year-old forward Oliver Murnieks, who became the youngest player in the history of the Latvian national team at the World Championships. Another young debutant is 18-year-old defenseman Albert Schmitz, who has already played for the national team at the Olympics.

At the same time, the team has lost a number of leaders. Due to injuries, Rodrigo Abols, Arturs Silovs, Dan Lochmelis, Eriks Mateiko, and other players are missing the tournament.

Several Latvian NHL players, including Zemgus Girgensons, Teodors Blugers, Elvis Merzlikins, and Uvis Balinskis, are also not helping the team. Additionally, one of the leaders of recent years, Eduards Tralmaks, remains out of the squad as his club continues to compete for the Calder Cup in the AHL.

Despite the personnel losses, the victory over Germany has noticeably improved the mood around the team. Now, many view the match against Austria as the first real test of Latvia's readiness to fight for the playoffs.

After today's game, the Latvian team will face matches against Finland, the USA, Great Britain, and Hungary.

The World Championship in Switzerland will conclude on May 31.
