Anna Kļučnika and Kristaps Berziņš showed the best results among Latvian runners at the Riga Marathon on Sunday, winning the titles of champions of Latvia in the marathon distance.
In the elite group, the winner of the marathon was Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum, who completed the distance in 2 hours 8 minutes and 58 seconds. He finished more than 2 minutes ahead of Ethiopian runner Getachew Keni Tufu, while Kenyan Stephen Kipkemoi rounded out the top three with a gap of about 4 minutes.
Among Latvian runners, the best result was shown by Berziņš, who finished in 2 hours 23 minutes and 50 seconds, taking ninth place overall. This was his sixth time becoming the champion of Latvia.
In the women's category, the fastest marathon runner was Ethiopian Ayantu Kumela, who completed it in 2 hours 26 minutes and 40 seconds. Second and third places went to her compatriots Obse Abdetta Deme and Adaworka Aberta Sadura, who finished 1 minute and 10 seconds and just under 3 minutes behind the winner, respectively.
Among Latvian female athletes, the fastest was Kļučnika, who finished in 2 hours 53 minutes and 40 seconds. She took eighth place overall.
In the half marathon men's category, the top three places were taken by Kenyan runners. The first to finish in 59 minutes and 15 seconds was Charles Mbata Matata. James Kipkogey finished 35 seconds behind him, and Benson Tandju Murkomen was 39 seconds behind.
Among Latvians, the fastest was Jānis Viškers, who completed the distance in 1 hour 12 minutes and 50 seconds, taking 14th place.
In the women's half marathon category, the victory went to Ethiopian Edgayehu Taye, who set a new record of 1 hour 4 minutes and 22 seconds. Second place, finishing just under 2 seconds behind the winner, was Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui, while Ugandan athlete Stella Chesang finished almost 4 minutes behind and took third place.
Among Latvian female athletes, the fastest in the half marathon was Ilze Yumike, who finished in 1 hour 21 minutes and 35 seconds, rounding out the top ten.
