Latvian athlete Ivar Samushonok on Saturday at the European Championship in Albania reached the bronze medal match, which will take place on Sunday, LETA reports.
Samushonok, competing in freestyle wrestling in the weight category up to 86 kilograms, began the tournament in the round of 16, where he defeated Austrian Simon Marchl with a score of 5:2, and in the quarterfinals, he overcame Swiss representative Umar Mavlaev — 13:1.
In the semifinals, the Latvian athlete faced bronze medalist of the European and World Championships, Arseniy Dzhioyev from Azerbaijan, to whom he lost with a score of 2:12.
In the bronze medal match, Samushonok will compete against one of the winners of the consolation tournament.
It was previously reported that in this championship, Alan Amirov, Elma Zeidler, and Alina Alexandra Antipova suffered defeats in the qualifying round.
Meanwhile, Greco-Roman wrestler Alexander Yurkyan continues to recover after shoulder surgery and is not participating in the championship.
The continental championship in Tirana will last until Sunday.
