Latvia's top player Alena Ostapenko suffered a defeat in the first round of the WTA 1000 doubles tournament in Madrid on Saturday, LETA reports.
Seeded fourth, Ostapenko and New Zealander Erin Routliffe lost to Czech players Marie Bouzkova and Linda Fruhvirtova with a score of 7-6 (7:2), 5-7, 6:10.
After losing in the first round, Ostapenko finished the tournament, earning ten WTA ranking points in doubles.
In the singles tournament, Ostapenko, ranked 40th in the WTA and seeded 21st, reached the third round.
The tournament in Madrid on clay courts will last until the end of next week.
