Latvia's top player Alena Ostapenko lost to American Hailey Baptiste 3-6, 4-6 in the Round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami on Monday, LETA reports.
Ostapenko is ranked 24th in the WTA rankings and was seeded 25th in the tournament, while Baptiste is in 45th place.
For reaching the fourth round, Ostapenko earned 120 ranking points, which allows her to occupy 23rd place in the current online ranking.
Previously, Ostapenko had not faced Baptiste.
Latvia's top player was given a bye in the first round, defeated Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (WTA 54) 6-4, 6-4 in the second round, and in the third round, she won against Italian Jasmine Paolini (WTA 7) with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, advancing to the Round of 16.
Baptiste, on her way to the fourth round, defeated German Tatjana Maria (WTA 59) 7-5, 6-2, then Russian Lyudmila Samsonova (WTA 22), seeded 19th, 6-3, 7-5, and also Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (WTA 8), seeded 9th, 6-3, 7-5.
As reported, Latvia's second-ranked player Daria Semenistaya lost in the first round match on Thursday, making her debut in the main draw of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami.
The tournament in Miami will conclude at the end of this week.
