Latvian tennis player Anastasija Sevastova will compete in the qualifying rounds at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Australia, the organizers of the event report, according to LETA.
Sevastova, who is ranked 188th in the WTA rankings, will need to overcome three qualifying rounds to reach the main draw.
Last season, she competed in the main draw of the US Open using a protected ranking. The last time Sevastova played in the qualifying rounds of a Grand Slam tournament was in 2016, when she advanced through three rounds to reach the main draw of the Australian Open.
It was previously reported that Latvian athletes Alona Ostapenko and Daria Semenistaya will also start in the main draw of the tournament. Ostapenko is ranked 23rd in the world rankings, while Semenistaya is ranked 101st, which was enough for Semenistaya to compete in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career without going through qualifying.
