Graudiņa and Samoilova confidently reached the final of the World Championship

The Latvian duo Tina Graudiņa/Anastasia Samoilova secured their place in the final of the World Beach Volleyball Championship taking place in Adelaide on Saturday, LETA reports.

Graudiņa and Samoilova, seeded fifth in the tournament, confidently defeated the main favorites of the competition — the Brazilians Tamela Coradello and Victoria Lopez — with a score of 2:0 (21:10, 21:16) in the semifinals.

Latvia will play in the World Championship final for the first time. Previously, the highest achievement of Latvian beach volleyball players was fourth place, achieved by Mārtiņš Pļaviņš and Jānis Šmēdiņš in 2011.

In the second semifinal, the American duo Terina Brasher and Kristen Nass, seeded third, will face the second pair from Brazil — Rebeca Cavalcanti and Karol Salgado.

On Friday, in the quarterfinals, Graudiņa and Samoilova defeated the Americans Molly Shaw and Kelly Chen (seeded seventh) with a score of 2:0 (21:18, 21:17), having lost to them twice in the Elite 16 tournaments this season.

In the group stage, Graudiņa and Samoilova secured three victories, in the first round of the playoffs they crushed the Dutch duo Mila Konijn and Daisy Poys (seeded 26th) with a score of 2:0 (21:9, 21:11), and in the battle for a place in the quarterfinals, they defeated the Germans Melanie Paulo and Lea Kunst (seeded 36th) — 2:0 (21:16, 21:16).

In the previous three World Championships — in 2019 in Hamburg, in 2022 in Rome, and in 2023 in Tlaxcala, Mexico — Graudiņa and Samoilova finished ninth.

In the men's tournament, Mārtiņš Pļaviņš and Kristiāns Fokerts lost in the first round of the playoffs.

The competition featured 48 teams in both men's and women's categories.

The two best teams from each group, as well as the four best teams that finished third, advanced directly to the playoff stage. The remaining eight pairs that finished third determined four more playoff participants in four matches. The competition then continued in an Olympic system.

The tournament in Adelaide will conclude this weekend.
