Scandal in Turkish Football: Arrest Warrants Issued for Referees, Players, and President of Top Club in Illegal Betting Case

In Turkey, about 600 football players will be summoned to testify as part of the investigation into the illegal betting case, reports Turkiye.

Earlier, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) reported that 371 out of 571 referees have at least one account with betting companies. Of these, 152 referees regularly place bets. A total of 149 main referees and assistants have been suspended.

The situation has attracted the attention of Interpol, and additional documents have been handed over to the Turkish police. These documents allege that players, coaches, and managers placed bets on illegal sites in countries such as Albania, Bulgaria, and Northern Cyprus.

Previously, the Turkish prosecutor's office issued arrest warrants for 21 individuals, including 17 referees and the president of one of the leading football clubs. According to the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office, at least 18 suspects were detained during coordinated morning raids in Istanbul and 11 other provinces. The referees, whose names are replaced with initials, are under investigation and suspected of abuse of power and influencing the outcomes of matches.
