Olympic Champion of 1980 Alexander Dityatin Passes Away

Three-time Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Alexander Dityatin has passed away at the age of 68.

This was reported on the official website of the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.

— Alexander Nikolaevich was the pride of our university and the entire country. He was not only a talented athlete but also a wonderful mentor who generously shared his knowledge and experience with students. His dedication to his work, professionalism, and human qualities earned him the deserved respect and love of colleagues and students. On behalf of the entire staff of the Herzen State Pedagogical University and personally, I express my sincere and deep condolences to the family and friends of Alexander Nikolaevich. This is an irreplaceable loss for all of us. The bright memory of Alexander Nikolaevich Dityatin will forever remain in our hearts, — said the university rector Sergey Tarasov.

Dityatin won three gold medals at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow in the team and individual all-around, as well as in the rings event. He also has six silver medals and one bronze from the Olympics. He is a seven-time world champion and a four-time European champion. In 2004, Dityatin was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
