The list of participants in the first European Nations Cup has been presented on the official website of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
Seventeen national teams will compete in the tournament: Latvia, Spain, the Netherlands, Estonia, Germany, Slovakia, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Hungary, Poland, France, Slovenia, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, and Romania.
The new tournament will allow national teams to have more meaningful games during international breaks. Matches will take place in November, December, and February.
Belarus and Russia have been suspended from competitions under the auspices of the IIHF. Other leading hockey countries in Europe — the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, and Switzerland — are participating in the Euro Tour.
— This is a huge step for European hockey. For years, our national associations have been asking for the development of a structure that would give meaning and consistency to international breaks.
With the European Nations Cup, we are finally offering a product that has the potential to develop the game both in sports and commercial terms, — commented the creation of the new tournament IIHF President Luc Tardif.
