FIFA is considering the idea of expanding the Club World Cup.
According to The Times, the organization is dissatisfied that the recent tournament took place without the participation of several top European teams that became champions of their countries — Liverpool, Barcelona, and Napoli. In this regard, FIFA wants to ease the quota for participation in the Club World Cup from two clubs from one country and expand the total number of participants to 48. UEFA, in turn, is categorically opposed to this.
The European association, for its part, does not support holding the tournament more frequently than once every four years but will not object to increasing the limit from two clubs per country to three.
The winner of the first edition of the competition in the new format is London’s Chelsea.
