An informal meeting of the European Union foreign ministers took place in Limassol (Cyprus) on Wednesday and Thursday. Baiba Braže, who was busy transitioning from one cabinet to another, was replaced at the ministers' meeting by the parliamentary secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Arturs Uršulskis.
Uršulskis reported that the total state and public support for Ukraine from Latvia from February 24, 2022, to February 20, 2026, has reached at least 1.08 billion euros, or 0.6% of the gross domestic product.
This includes military assistance to Ukraine amounting to 675 million euros, humanitarian aid and support for the Ukrainian government totaling 92 million euros, as well as 304 million euros directed towards supporting residents of Ukraine in Latvia, and 17 million euros for supporting reforms, development, and reconstruction.
In Uršulskis' opinion, Ukraine is currently in a better position on the battlefield than in previous years.
He believes it is necessary to continue applying pressure on Russia through restrictive measures, including sanctions, and to develop a strong 21st sanctions package against Russia.
The parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia pointed out to his diplomatic colleagues that to achieve a lasting and just peace in Ukraine, it is important for the EU to focus on supporting Ukraine, including its recovery, strengthening the army and defense capabilities, as well as accelerated integration into the EU.
It is also necessary to ensure accountability for Russia. This involves the establishment of a special tribunal for crimes against Ukraine.
