“We will improve,” “deepen,” “perfect”: Kulbergs’ government is generous with promises

Андрис Кулбергс.

So far, for prime minister candidate Andris Kulbergs, everything is going better than he probably thought.

Let us remind you: the president, assigning Kulbergs to form the government, allocated him 10 days for preparatory work — already on Monday, May 25, the prime minister candidate must present the coalition model.

However, already on the evening of Wednesday, May 20, the future prime minister agreed on a very broad ruling coalition, which will have (together with three independent deputies) as many as 69 mandates in the Saeima, that is, a constitutional majority!

The new government of Kulbergs is being formed by four political forces: 1) United List, 2) National Alliance, 3) Union of Greens and Farmers, and 4) “New Unity.”

While there is still no clarity regarding the ministers, the list of priorities remains unchanged.

It is clear that the main priority is security. And in light of recent events: security from incoming drones. “We will create an effective system for detecting unmanned aerial vehicles and will improve air defense and electronic warfare systems,” it is stated in the “Agreement on the Government’s Tasks and Principles of Work.”

Of course, the question arises: why, in the 5th year of the war in Ukraine, when drones have been actively used in recent years, have our politicians only now woken up and started talking about combating drones?! However, this is already a rhetorical question, and let us consider that it is better late than… too late.

It is obvious that the document on work plans was written “on the fly,” in great haste, so many points of the plan, as they say, are not elaborated. The traditional verbosity of the series “we will improve,” “we will perfect,” “we will evaluate,” “we will facilitate” could not be avoided either…

There is no specificity regarding the future of the century project Rail Baltica, and there is no clarity about what the future government intends to do with the national airline. The phrase that the government will evaluate the business plan of airBaltic does not reassure or convince. How many times has it been evaluated already! I would like to understand: does Kulbergs’ government intend to invest taxpayers' money into the airline again, and if so, under what conditions?

One way or another, it is expected that the new government will be approved by the Saeima on May 28.
