An operation to search for explosive objects from wartime has begun in the Baltic Sea. This directly affects the safety of navigation and fishing in the region.
From May 1 to May 13, international exercises "Open Spirit 2026" are taking place in the waters, the Latvian Navy reported. Their task is to detect and neutralize mines and other dangerous objects that still remain on the seabed.
The Baltic Sea is considered one of the most "mined" in the world: since the times of World War I and World War II, thousands of unexploded munitions have remained here. They pose a risk to commercial vessels, fishermen, and underwater infrastructure, which is why such operations are conducted regularly.
About 400 military personnel are participating in the exercises, with ships from various countries involved, including NATO's first permanent mine countermeasures group — SNMCMG1. This multinational unit specializes in the search and destruction of mines and can be rapidly deployed anywhere as part of the alliance's response forces.
In addition to the practical task of clearing the seabed, "Open Spirit" also serves military purposes: it practices interaction between fleets, divers, and headquarters of different countries, standardizing procedures and tactics.
This year, the maneuvers are taking place alongside the large Swedish army exercises "Aurora 2026," which enhances coordination of forces in the region and adds strategic significance.
The "Open Spirit" exercises are held annually in rotation in one of the Baltic states and are considered an important part of the regional security system.
A media day is scheduled for May 13 — journalists will be shown how the mine search and naval units' operations are conducted.
Such operations help make the Baltic Sea safer, although it is currently impossible to completely clear it of the legacy of past wars.
