The Prime Minister Allows Changes to the Second Level, but Not Now

The issue of second-level pension savings should not be considered before the upcoming parliamentary elections in the fall, but should be left to the discretion of the next parliament, stated Prime Minister Evika Silina in the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama."

Silina believes that improvements in the pension system are possible and discussions about them are necessary. According to her, under certain circumstances, people could be given more opportunities to manage their second-level pension savings.

However, in Silina's opinion, it is not advisable to make changes to the system before the elections, as in an election atmosphere it cannot be guaranteed that a good decision will be made.

A discussion has been initiated at the government coalition meeting regarding the payment to residents from second-level pension savings to cover medical expenses, and it will continue next week. This proposal was put forward by the Union of Greens and Farmers.

The proposal stipulates that the Cabinet of Ministers will determine the diagnoses and other criteria for requesting funds from second-level pension savings. "New Unity" and "Progressives" were previously skeptical about opening this issue during the pre-election period.
