Chairperson of the Saeima Daiga Mierina flew to Seoul to meet with the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Vu Won Shik.
"The first meeting creates guests, and the second creates friends," said Vu Won Shik to his Latvian colleague. It is worth noting that Shik visited Latvia in May of last year.
In her response, Mierina acknowledged: "Latvia is currently facing important choices, especially regarding the strengthening of energy capacities. Your experience in this area is very valuable to us."
He told the Koreans that global processes, including the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, directly affect daily life in Latvia.
The parties discussed opportunities for cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, particularly highlighting small modular nuclear power plants.

Interestingly, Latvia is the largest supplier of peat to Korea, providing about 70% of the required volume.
Mierina suggested that the high-ranking Koreans continue to foster friendship and invited Shik to visit Latvia in 2028 during the Song and Dance Festival.
Mierina did not fly to Korea alone – she is accompanied by MP Andris Kulbergs.
