The 14th Saeima has managed to remain within the bounds of conventional morality before the election period, said Janis Vucans, the chairman of the Saeima's commission on mandates, ethics, and statements, at the conference "Ethics in Modern Parliamentarism" taking place in parliament on Tuesday.
The deputy noted that in the previous Saeima, 41 violations of the ethical code were initiated and 20 cases of violations were considered. Before that, usually five to six cases were recorded over the entire period of the Saeima's work, said Vucans.
"In this Saeima, we have not yet exceeded the number five," he noted, adding that the number of cases considered was even lower: complaints were received, but most of them turned out to be unfounded. He concluded that one composition of parliament is significantly different from another.
As reported earlier, on Tuesday, a conference titled "Ethics in Modern Parliamentarism" is taking place in the Saeima, where legislators, representatives of the academic community, civil society, and foreign experts discuss the ethical challenges for deputies in modern democracy, paying special attention to the experience of the Baltic states.
