Latvia May Refuse Swimming Tournaments – Russian Swimmers Allowed

The Nordic countries have stated that they intend to refuse to host water sports tournaments due to the decision of the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) to allow Russians to compete with national symbols.

The Nordic Swimming Federation includes the federations of Latvia, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Lithuania, Norway, Iceland, and Sweden. The chair is Estonia.

The announcement was made by the president of the Estonian Swimming Union, Erki Susi, whose words are quoted by the press service of the Estonian organization.

"The Nordic swimming federations confirm that as potential host countries for competitions, they do not intend to hold international water sports competitions in the coming years until the current situation and decisions change," Susi said.

He noted that despite the fact that the Nordic Swimming Federation does not support the decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes back into international tournaments, their athletes will continue to compete at the international level.

"Athletes should not suffer from this decision or be sidelined from major competitions," Susi stated.

World Aquatics announced on April 13 the restoration of membership for Russia and Belarus and the admission of athletes from both countries under their national flags.
