The European Parliament, with 389 votes in favor, 206 against, and 32 abstentions, agreed to start negotiations with EU member states on a revised common EU system for the return of third-country nationals illegally residing in the EU. Stricter rules have been introduced for individuals posing a security threat.

The return to a third country can occur based on an agreement between member states and the EU and the third country, including so-called return centers.
