Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) expects more active participation from municipalities in addressing the problem of high energy resource bills this winter, writes LETA.

In an interview with TV3 on Wednesday, Prime Minister Evika Silina noted that winter in Latvia should not come as a surprise; however, it has not been this harsh in a long time, so she agrees that support for households should be increased this winter.

The politician believes that municipalities should be more actively involved in addressing this issue, as helping their residents is their primary task.

Speaking about proposals to expand the availability of housing benefits, Silina pointed out that the first option presented by the Ministry of Welfare was not agreed upon with the parties involved and therefore did not receive support, while in the second option, the coefficient applied to the benefit had already been significantly reduced.

According to the Prime Minister, the Union of Greens and Farmers has made a very large number of various statements regarding the bills without coordinating them with anyone, and now the government has to "deal with this." Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis (ZKP) also stated that late payment penalties for overdue bills would be postponed, but nothing has been implemented yet.

Evaluating the progress of the Rail Baltica railway project, the Prime Minister expressed the opinion that oversight of the project has improved, as evidenced by the change of several immediate leaders and even three ministers.

The head of government emphasized that international auditors have been engaged for Rail Baltica, who will show "where the money is going" and help streamline project management.

In response to a question about whether the Rail Baltica railway lines in Latvia will be completed by 2030, Silina stated that she does not know.
