Long-term costs for the conservation of engineering structures of the first phase of the construction of the railway project "Rail Baltica" bridge over the Daugava are currently estimated at 551,000 euros, the Ministry of Transport informed the LETA agency.
The Ministry has received an updated report from the implementing company of the "Rail Baltica" project in Latvia — SIA "Eiropas dzelzceļa līnijas" (EDzL) — regarding the conservation works of unfinished project facilities.
The report contains information about the projected costs for the conservation of structures in the area of the Central Station in Riga, as well as the section near Riga Airport — the overpass from the station building to Dzirnieku Street towards Marupe. It also specifies the allocation of funding for 2026–2027.
At the same time, EDzL continues to work on calculating the costs for the conservation of specific sections near the Central Station and Riga Airport. These calculations will be refined according to the ministry's requirements.
In the near future, the Ministry of Transport plans to prepare an informational report on the conservation works of unfinished project facilities of "Rail Baltica" and the necessary state funding to submit it for consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Transport Minister Aitis Švinka previously stated that the conservation project works should begin this year and cover the supports and span of the bridge over the Daugava, the supports of the railway station section near Riga Airport towards Marupe, as well as the sheet pile walls and other related elements.
EDzL previously indicated that the construction of the overpass over Lastadijas and Krasta Streets would be completed in the first quarter of 2025. This engineering structure is 140 meters long, with one of its supports built in the Daugava, and the span of the structure passing over the river. EDzL emphasizes that the construction of the bridge over the Daugava has not yet started.
The company explained that not the entire overpass is subject to conservation, but only the part of the structure that passes over the second support — the so-called open part of the span.
Prime Minister Evika Siliņa noted that responsibility must be assigned for the unfinished supports, and an investigation into project management is currently underway. EDzL previously assured that the support would be conserved this year.
As previously reported, according to "RB Rail," the costs for the first phase of the "Rail Baltica" project in the Baltic countries could reach 14.3 billion euros, of which 5.5 billion euros are in Latvia. At the same time, savings of up to 500 million euros are possible through the optimization of technical solutions, as well as through other potential savings.
The total project costs based on the cost-benefit analysis in the Baltic countries could amount to 23.8 billion euros. In the previous analysis of 2017, it was assumed that the project would cost 5.8 billion euros.
The "Rail Baltica" project involves the construction of a European standard gauge railway line from Tallinn to the border of Lithuania and Poland to connect the Baltic states with other countries in Europe. A new 870-kilometer line with a gauge of 1435 mm is planned, along which trains will be able to reach speeds of up to 240 km/h.
EDzL is a fully state-owned capital company with a share capital of 4.445 million euros.
