Latvia has not yet received an invitation to join the Council of Peace established by U.S. President Donald Trump, and a decision on possible participation has not been made, stated the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, at a press conference following a meeting with officials responsible for Latvia's foreign policy.
He reported that the issue was discussed at today’s meeting, but neither Latvia nor Estonia received an official invitation. In the president's opinion, the establishment of the Council of Peace should be viewed as a positive step in implementing the peace plan to resolve the situation in the Middle East and in the Gaza Strip.
At the same time, discussions are currently taking place in European countries regarding the Council of Peace from both a legal and political perspective, and Latvia will coordinate its further actions with the European Council. The President of Latvia did not rule out that Latvia may join the Council of Peace in the future.
Speaking about the possible mechanism for joining, the President of Latvia noted that it still needs to be considered, as in this case, the Saeima and the government will need to agree on it.
