Even if combat operations in Ukraine can be frozen this year, this should not be perceived as a decision that allows for a reduction in attention to Latvia's security and a decrease in efforts to strengthen it, said the Commander of the National Armed Forces (NBS) Kaspars Pudiņš in an interview this morning on the program "Morning Panorama" (LTV), as reported by LETA.

Assessing the security situation in Latvia as a whole, Pudiņš noted that it depends on a number of factors, including the impact of the U.S. attack on Venezuela; however, the greatest influence still comes from Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.

The Commander of the National Armed Forces added that the upcoming elections to the Saeima this fall will also be an important event. Overall, he does not predict significant changes in aspects affecting Latvia's security.

The head of the army reported that this year more than half of the defense budget will be directed towards strengthening military capabilities. According to him, development in this area is somewhat unbalanced, but it is necessary, as in previous years the development of these capabilities lagged behind - before the war in Ukraine, the Latvian army focused on other priorities.
