In the Saeima, the attempt by the National Alliance to dismantle the railway towards Russia was thwarted

The deputies even refused to pass this initiative to the parliamentary committee.

The attempt by the National Alliance to pass a parliamentary resolution through the Saeima instructing the Prime Minister to immediately ensure the start of the process of dismantling the railway towards Russia ended in failure.

"We cannot provide the enemy with ready infrastructure that can be used in case of aggression. Military analysis from Ukraine clearly shows that the railway was the backbone of Russian military infrastructure, and we must not allow such a threat in Latvia. We must take all necessary counter-mobility measures, which means dismantling the railway lines at the border with Russia and Belarus, as recommended by the National Armed Forces and foreign military experts," emphasized the National Alliance.

Latvia still uses the 1520 mm railway network of Russian standard. There are two railway corridors leading from Latvia to Russia: Rezekne-Zilupe-state border and Rezekne-Karsava-state border, and with Belarus — Daugavpils-Indra-state border.

The NA noted that "the existing infrastructure creates a direct military risk, as in the event of an invasion it can be used to transport military equipment and units of the aggressor. Ukraine's experience proves that Russian railway troops can very quickly restore damaged infrastructure and create military logistics corridors."

"Both the National Armed Forces and foreign military experts, including American analysts, emphasize that the presence of railway lines at the border significantly complicates the implementation of counter-mobility measures and is recognized as a direct threat to the security of Latvia. Experts recommend dismantling not only the tracks but also the embankments, channels, and other infrastructure to completely deprive the enemy of the ability to quickly restore mobility capabilities," the National Alliance's explanation states.

However, the majority of Saeima deputies received this initiative without enthusiasm — the parliamentarians not only refused to include this document in the agenda of today's and next week's (in a week) plenary session but also to even pass it to the relevant committee. Thus, the document was completely rejected.
