The deputies of the Saeima, considering the budget for the next year, rejected another attempt by the opposition United List (UL) to liquidate the Ministry of Climate and Energy (MCE).
The proposal of the United List (UL) envisaged the liquidation of the Ministry of Climate and Energy (MCE) and the transfer of its functions to the Ministry of Smart Governance and Regional Development (MSGRD) and the Ministry of Economics.
The deputies also indicated in their proposal that the funds intended for the MCE should be redirected to cover the national debt.
The deputies noted the importance of the ministry and pointed to the experience of other countries where such "climate ministries" already exist and are necessary.
The Minister of Climate and Energy, Kaspars Melnis (Union of Greens and Farmers), stated that "everything can be abolished," but the question is what to do next. He emphasized that the ministry is necessary to achieve various climate goals. He noted that in the past, when the MCE did not exist, it was difficult to obtain funding for various climate projects.
