Can order be established in migration policy without a parliamentary investigation?

As previously reported, the Saeima has established its second investigative commission in the last couple of weeks - this time to analyze the reasons for the mass immigration of third-country nationals to Latvia.

This evening, in a live broadcast on Latvian TV, Saeima deputy from the "Progressives" party Kaspars Briškens questioned the appropriateness of creating such a commission, as all issues and problems in migration policy could, if desired, be discussed in the commission on citizenship, migration, and social cohesion, as well as in the national security commission. According to Briškens, the National Alliance initiated the creation of such a commission solely to increase political capital ahead of the elections.

The initiator of the parliamentary investigation, Jānis Dombrava (National Alliance), disagreed with this argument, believing that there may be violations of the law in migration policy. A regular Saeima commission cannot identify these crimes, while a parliamentary investigative commission has the right to involve a prosecutor in its investigation. The deputy pointed out that currently, 105,000 third-country nationals have received temporary and permanent residence permits in Latvia, which is a very impressive figure!

Whether the parliamentary investigative commission will be able to change anything in migration policy - for example, tighten the rules for issuing student visas (temporary residence permits), which the politicians of the National Alliance dream of - remains to be seen. Meanwhile, this parliamentary investigative commission has become the 30th since the restoration of independence. It is noteworthy that most parliamentary investigative commissions were created to investigate problems... in the banking sector and in connection with the bankruptcy or liquidation of certain banks!
